Some may be thinking, why would someone cut up a shoe and seal it back up with Duct tape? Let’s begin with a brief history lesson of the Vans Half Cabs. In the 1980s before the introduction to the Half Cab, the Vans Caballero High Top reigned supreme in the skating community. These shoes were widely used by the skateboarders everywhere, but when a new generation of skateboarders ventured from the verts to the streets, the demand changed. Skaters wanted a lower cut shoe and took their demands into their own hands. Street skaters took the High Tops, cut the shoe halfway down and sealed the ankle collar with duct tape. When Steve Caballero saw this, he responded to Vans with a new idea – to create a lower cut version of the Caballero High Top.
And the Vans Half Cab was born.
Vans will start the commemoration to 20 years of the legendary skate shoe staple with the hand-cut and duct-taped Supreme x Vans Half Cab collaboration. Each of the twenty pairs available will be cut, numbered, and signed by Steve Caballero himself. If you’re in Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, or London you may be lucky enough to snag a pair of these limited edition Half Cabs at the Supreme shop this weekend.
Also throughout the rest of the year Vans will be releasing new colorways of the Half Cab every month of 2012. Check out Vans website to see each month’s new release drop.
